Old Fashioned Apple Pie!

The crisp fall air calls for a slice of warm, homemade apple pie. There’s something magical about the smell of apples, cinnamon, and buttery crust wafting through the kitchen. But let’s be real—making a perfect pie crust from scratch can be daunting. That’s where Pappy’s Pie Dough comes in to save the day! With this tried-and-true recipe and our ready-to-use pie dough, you’ll have a show-stopping Old-Fashioned Apple Pie without breaking a sweat.

The Recipe: Old-Fashioned Apple Pie

We like to use tart baking apples like Haralson or Granny Smith for the best flavor balance in this pie. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 4 pods of Pappy's Pie Dough, thawed but still chilled

  • 5-7 tart baking apples

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • Dash of salt

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions:

  1. Prep Your Dough:

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Make sure your Pappy’s Pie Dough is thawed but still chilled for easy handling. For each crust (top and bottom), roll out on a floured surface to about 12 inches in diameter and ¼ inch thick. If you're using a deep-dish pie tin, you may need more than one pod for each crust.

  2. Assemble the Base:

  3. Lay the bottom crust in a 9-inch pie pan, allowing the edges to overlap the sides.

  4. Prepare the Filling: Core and peel the apples, then slice them thin. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss the apple slices in the mixture until evenly coated. For less tart apples, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

  5. Fill the Pie:

Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust, spreading it evenly. Dot the filling with butter to enhance the flavor.

  6. Add the Top Crust:

Place the second layer of pie dough over the filling, crimp the edges to seal, and cut 1-inch slits or fork marks in the crust to allow steam to escape. For a professional touch, sprinkle large crystal decorator’s sugar over the top.

  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake at 400°F for 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  8. Cool and Enjoy:

Let the pie cool on a rack to set before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature for a taste of fall in every bite!
